Video grab of a rocket being assembled and fired

Gaza:  In the minutes before the ceasefire kicked in at Gaza this morning,  Hamas fired a flurry of rockets towards Israel - 30 according to some counts.

Israel has argued that that these rockets are fired from civilian areas, and this is why its retaliatory strikes can result in civilian casualties.

But this morning, NDTV witnessed one such rocket silo being created under a tent right next to the hotel where our team was staying.  Minutes later, we saw the rocket being fired, just before the 72-hour ceasefire came into effect.

It began with a mysterious  tent with a blue canopy that bobbed up yesterday (August 4) at 6:30 am in an open patch of land next to our window.  We saw three men making a multitude of journeys in and out of the tent, sometimes with wires.

An hour later, they emerged, dismantled the tent, changed their clothes and walked away.

The next morning - today - we woke to news of the 72-hour ceasefire but just before it was to take effect, the rocket next to our hotel was fired.  There was a loud explosion and a whooshing sound. The cloud of smoke that rose was captured by our cameraperson.

This report is being aired on NDTV and published on ndtv.com after our team left the Gaza strip - Hamas has not taken very kindly to any reporting of its rockets being fired. But just as we reported the devastating consequences of Israel's offensive on Gaza's civilians, it is equally important to report on how Hamas places those very civilians at risk by firing rockets deep from the heart of civilian zones.

This is what journalism has been reduced to these days.

rehashing old news with new visuals. With zero perspective.

wt perspective are u talking abt ? .. the entire world media has been covering the issue mainly from palestenian perspective ... israel has been crying foul over HAMAS using civilian places to shoot rockets on to israel citizens for a long time now but no one really cared to look at the issue from israeli perspective... this is the first time that some one has showed it frm israeli perspective and what they have been fighting really...... criticize where u have to but u have to give credit to those who deserve it aswell , this is a clear case of excellent journalism ..

After all the constant whining for Gaza by NDTV has finally paid off, with Israel probably sponsoring this trip.

The programme itself is poorly shot and presented, and is best used as just another data point in the conflict. It doesn't deserve any kudos, because the journalists simply stumbled on to this. Like a 5yr old kid, winning an Easter egg hunt.

It is probably true that most of the mainstream media has focused on Gaza destruction without mentioning Hamas' culpability in it. But I listen to NPR only, and it has a clear Israel slant in the conflict.

Also, none of the major powers have called for sanctions on Israel. So its reasonably clear that they are aware of Hamas' tactics. My only point is that this video doesn't add much depth to understanding of the conflict in the region.

That understanding will come once the conflict subsides and until then I consider all videos and articles on this as knee jerk at best, and war profiteering at worst.

i agree that NDTV is one of the most corrupt media houses out there but it still has a few true journalists like these guys who aren't given the credit they deserve because they don't resort to a$$ licking when it comes to their reporting , Calling this as an Israel sponsored trip is a little far fetched in my opinion..

I rarely listen to NPR but Mr.Srinivasan the journalist that we see in the video is definitely one of the best journalists out there , Pls checkout his show called Truth Vs Hype on NDTV , he doesn't spare any one when it comes to reporting unlike other big name "journalists" that we see on NDTV .

These guys may have just stumbled upon this incident by sheer luck but they did their part in covering it in a best way possible and also its the only video of its kind until now .

working in an active war zone while anticipating the worst is not a scenario that i'd imagine myself to be in .

I agree with all ur other points , mainstream media clearly took their sides while reporting this issue  , We just have to wait till it ends to knw the true story behind this , god knows how many innocents are gonna die by being stuck in this stupid Sh1t.

edit : S0rry u can find the video in the following link, just realized that it dint get pasted here earlier
