HYDERABAD: The Old City, which has largely been insulated from bandh calls by Telangana activists in the past, came to a grinding halt on Tuesday as residents participated in large numbers for the socio-economic Intensive Household Survey.

Business establishments at important commercial hubs of Madina, Pathergatti, Gulzar Houz, Lad Bazaar and Shah Ali Banda remained closed throughout the day. Roads wore a deserted look, a stark contrast with the chock-a-block traffic during rush hour, as residents preferred to stay indoors waiting for the enumerators. Buses were off roads and other modes of transportation, including autorickshaws, was scanty.

According to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) sources, the South Zone, which covers the Old City and other areas such as Rajendranagar and Attapur, around 1.53 of the 3.37 lakh households, as per the 2011 census, were surveyed till 1.30 pm. Progress seemed slow after lunch as the number inched past the 57 per cent mark, with a total of approximately 1.96 lakh houses, being surveyed till 5 pm. However, the percentage of houses which were covered by 7 pm stood at 70 per cent.

Interestingly, the GHMC found out that there was an increase of 70,319 households since the 2011 census.

Zonal commissioner (South) Balasubrahmanyam Reddy said that while all 3,469 enumeration officers were on duty, the GHMC had to make the most of 4,250 volunteers who had reported to duty on Tuesday. The corporation had estimated that they would require 9,625 such associate enumerators in the area. "We have done our best not to leave any household," he said.

No show of enumerators was reported in city mayor Majid Hussain's Ahmed Nagar division. According to nodal officer Lachiram, 205 associate enumerators, who are students from an engineering college failed to report on the field on Tuesday.

"We had only 15 volunteers. Locals came forward to help us with the survey and we covered around 80 per cent of Ahmed Nagar," Lachiram said.

Meanwhile, locals from around 100 households in Jangammet and Falaknuma protested as they said no enumerator had reached their neighbourhood. "We have chosen to stay at home because of the survey. But as nobody has arrived, we have lost between Rs 250 to Rs 400 which we could have worked for," said Mahendranath, a resident of the area. No show of associate enumerators was reported in pockets of IS Sadan as well.
