A drunk and abusive Indian passenger was tied to his seat on a 12-hour Air India flight from Melbourne to Delhi on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old man allegedly became aggressive after a few drinks, and started shouting at crew members. He allegedly also tore at the clothes of two crew members and tried to bite passengers.

He was finally overpowered by crew and passengers and tied with ropes and wires to his seat.

The ruckus had the pilot considering the option of diverting the flight and stop at Singapore for the safety of other passengers. But the airline reportedly advised him to continue flying to avoid any delay.

The moment the flight landed in Delhi, the passenger was arrested and charged.

Airport security agencies entered the aircraft, caught hold of the man and turned him over to the police.

This joins a long list of mid-air incidents.

In April, an unruly passenger on a Virgin Australia flight to Indonesia set off a false hijack alarm. The passenger was arrested when the aircraft landed in Bali.

In January last year, a passenger on a flight from Iceland to New York's JFK Airport was tied to his seat with duct tapes and handed over to security men after he kicked up a row.
