A 6.0 magnitude earthquake woke up people living in northern California this morning.

The earthquake's epicenter was located about six miles south-southwest of Napa and 51 miles west-southwest of Sacramento about 3:20 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Dozens of social media users posted photos and videos of damage inside their homes.

(CNN) -- A preliminary 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the northern San Francisco Bay area early Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck six miles southwest of Napa and nine miles from Sonoma, according to the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of injuries

Napa County Fire Capt. Jim Christenson said his units were driving around looking for damage.

"So far at the fire house we lost a fish tank and some glassware," he said.

A dispatcher for the Napa County Sheriff's Office said there was some water damage. She declined to provide additional details, saying she's not authorized to talk to the media.

CNN's Augie Martin, who lives in San Francisco described the earthquake as "the softest, most rolling 6.0 earthquake I've ever felt. It was obvious -- no doubt. But living in the city proper, it was more of a roller than a sharp jolt."

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 has shaken northern California, reports the US Geological Survey.

The USGS said it struck at 03:20 local time (1020 GMT) four miles (6km) north-west of American Canyon, at a depth of 6.7 miles.

The site is 51 miles from Sacramento and about 30 miles north-east of San Francisco, where many Twitter users say it woke them up.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

Twitter users contacted the BBC to share their experiences.

Sarah McLellan tweeted: "On 6th floor entire building swaying, shaking", while Matt Dyar said: "Major shaker. Stuff off shelfs. Broken glass. No house damage that is obvious."

Another Twitter user said: "I haven't felt one that big since the Northridge quake in the early 90s."
