Quite possibly a major reason why the dowry system is still prevalent in India. For what will people say when you call off a wedding ?
Fortunately for Rani Tripathi, what people had to say didn't matter any more. Not when the demands grew ever more outrageous as the wedding date approached.

Many a times women complain that men are the reason for under development of women in the society, but forget that they are the ones(99.9% of women) who do not protest against dowry and say "I am not going to marry him if he asks dowry". This is a story of a girl who showed the world that girls do dare to shun the tradition.

"We don’t want dowry, they had previously said. However, each time there was a pre-nuptial ritual, they would start with their demands. From furniture to jewellery to a Swift car, the demands kept increasing. I was apprehensive to call off the wedding because you know how the society is. People talk. They question the woman’s character. But the day I saw my father crying, I decided that we had had enough. I told my elder brother that I wanted to call off the wedding. He said the cards had already been printed, but I told him that then I would have to suffer throughout my life. We decided to film their demands on camera and took the footage to Mulund Police Station. The police immediately registered an FIR and they were arrested. We were also able to recover some of the things that they had taken from us. Unlike what I had expected, I got many proposals thereafter. Today, I am married to a music composer and have two children."
