Birth Anniv. Of Gidugu Ramamurthy: Father Of 'spoken Telugu Movement

The birth anniversary of the father of 'Spoken Telugu Movement' (Vyaavaharika Bhashodyamam) Gidugu Ramamurthy falls on this day, which is also Vinayaka Chavithi this year. Though it is a rare coincidence, the importance can be gauged from the fact that August 29 is designated as Mother Tongue day. Gidugu was born in 1863 and at the dawn of new millennium, he led a movement in favour of "spoken Telugu" as different from the Telugu language found in books. It was due to his great efforts that the Telugu language came out of the shackles of orthodox meters and norms. Telugu people will remain indebted to him forever.
