tom bhayya
Bhayya matti karigipotadhi kada .. i mean alanti statues a chesthunnaru anukunta few years nundi :) idhigo idhi last yr news HYDERABAD: With record number of idols and even an inedible laddu dumped into it, nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of debris was dredged out of the Hussainsagar lake after the Ganesh immersion last week, officials said.Over 800 metric tonnes out of nearly 4,000 metric tonnes debris was generated by the Vishwakarma idol immersion, two days after the Ganesh immersion concluded, which according to the Buddha Purnima Project officials was done without any prior information. While debris cleaning work began from the first day of immersion itself, the final drive that kick-started on the night of September 19 was completed on September 21. After the final immersion day on September 18, around 1,600 metric tonnes of debris was removed, which is nearly double of last year's 782 metric tonnes of debris after the final immersion, officials said."The cleaning works got extended by another day due to Vishwakarma idol immersion. There was no prior information about the immersion. However, on the night of September 20, about 100 vehicles came and idols were immersed in the lake. By then, we were about to wrap up the work," said R P Khajuria, HMDA member (environment).Environmentalists said that the remains of the idols immersed near the Tank Bund side of the lake have not been removed as usual as the lake bed is too deep to clear the debris. "The hazardous waste will remain and get slowly mixed up with the lake water affecting the ecosystem. It is easy to pollute but difficult to clean," said A Vijay Kumar, who has done extensive research on Hussainsagar lake pollution due to Ganesh idol immersion. "At least, the authorities should ensure that immersion is not allowed on the Tank Bund side if it cannot be cleaned," Kumar added. If last year, a whopping Rs 8 lakh were spent to clean up the lake after the immersion of the Elephant God, this year, officials said, the tender was given for Rs 10 lakh. "The actual spending might go up. The bills are awaited," officials said.A whopping 60,000 idols were immersed in the various water bodies spread across the state capital of which a major chunk were immersed in the Hussainsagar lake, this year.
