if you are going out of the airport then you need transit visa

if the plane is in the same airport then no

for example there are 2 airports in london

if you get down at airport A and need to board the plane in airport b, then you need transit visa

if you get down at airport A and you have the connecting flight in airport A itself then you don't need transit visa

but before all this, you need to have a valid visa (ante valid stamped visa)

i went thru Atlanta-->London-->Hyderabad in 2011

Make sure that you take off from the same terminal that you landed in London. You get Direct Air Transit visa automatically. Its not a problem if you take from the same terminal.

Heathrow Airport is distributed across many places. Its not just one centralized airport like many other airports in the world. Because of that, it requires you to go through the immigration check when you change from one terminal to another.

Terminal 1,2 and 3 are located at one place..4 is located at different place and 5 at some other place. If you have to go from 1,2 nd 3 to 4 or 5, you need do go under the immigration check - that's where the problem is. Ideally, moving from among 1,2 and 3 terminals may not require transit visa, because you don't have to go under the immigration check. But my suggestion is to avoid it completely. And travel only if you are sure that you are changing the flight at the same terminal.

I am not a legal immigration expert.
