Hyderabad_Nawab Posted August 31, 2014 Report Posted August 31, 2014 Report of the prestigious Brooking Institute reveals that foreign students in the US, especially from India, China and South Korea, have contributed USD 21.8 billion as tuition fees and US 12.8 billion as living costs to the US economy over a period of 5 years – from 2008 to 2012. The data for the report was collected from 118 metro areas of the US that are home to at least 1,500 foreign students each. Among Indian students, Mumbai and Hyderabad students alone have contributed USD 1.25 billion to the economy of the United States. During the last five years, 17,294 students from Mumbai, 9,141 from Chennai, 8,835 students from Bangalore and 8,728 students from New Delhi went to the US to pursue further studies. Study abroad students enrolled in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) courses in the US include 31% Chinese, 27% Indian and 5% South Korean students. Hyderabad is the top source city of foreign STEM students for the US..... @3$% @3$% As many as 20,800 students from Hyderabad got enrolled in the STEM fields (80% of overall Hyderabadi students who went to US from 2008-2012). About 91% of Hyderabad students are pursuing Master’s degree in the US while only 4% are enrolled in Bachelors’ degree courses. Moreover, about 9,100 students got enrolled in Computer and Information Sciences while 8,800 students from the city got enrolled in Engineering degree courses. Unfortunately, the top 5 destination institutions for F1 students from Hyderabad do not have any major research activity under the Carnegie classification system – a standard expected of higher studies in US. :3D_Smiles: These include: International Technological University (ITU), which is a non-profit medium sized college. It is accredited to offer Master’s courses but has no research activity. University of Northern Virginia and Tri-Valley University, which are not accredited and have been recently shut down by Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Stratford University which is accredited. Hergaun University which is again not accredited. DHS closed the Northern Virginia and Tri-Valley Universities for abusing the F1 visa system and the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program to allow foreigners to sneak in to work for employers instead of studying for a degree program. All STEM students on F1 visa make up only 1.1% students for Smaller Programs and 16.5% students for Larger Programs in Carnegie-classified Masters colleges. 8 of the top 10 cities with highest share of F1 (student) visa for students in STEM fields are in India.
