09/06/2014: Obama Decided to Delay Immigration Executive Actions Until After November 2014 Elections

  • Today, a report indicates that the White House official confimed today that the President has decided not to take immigration executive actions before the November election this year because of its impact on the vulnerable Democrats Senate elections this year. Under the political dynamics involved with the 2014 election and current political environment, this decision would have been the only right decision. As we reported earlier, the President had four options: (1) Delay the executive actions until after the November 2014 elections to save the Democratic majority Senate; (2)(A) Take executive actions for immigration reform covering comprehensive and broad reform of immigration systems including relief undocumented immigrants as well as expansion of legal immigration opportunities before the November 2014 elections; (2)(B) Take executive actions on piecemeal immigration reforms basis at different stages, releasing the reforms that will have minimal impact on the November 2014 elections before the election, followed by broader reform of undocumented immigrant relief and more controversial reforms after November 2014 election; and (3) No exercise of immigration executive actions.
  • The option (3) was out of question because of the upcoming 2016 Presidential election and impact of Hispanics and other independent voters. One time, options (2)(A) or (2)(B) were reviewed carefully, but eventually the President must have decided that saving the Democratic majority Senate is more important than anything else at this point. As we reported quite sometime back, the angry Hispanics and independent voters should understand that they have no other options under the given circumstances, considering the fact that Republican majoirty Senate and Republican President may totally deprive them of the immigration relief for undocumented immigrants and reform of broken legal immigration systems to relieve legal immigrants from the hopelessly long line of waits. Today's reported President decision still leaves an opportunity to provide such executive actions after the 2014 elections since the President reportedly has a legal authority to exercise such executive power under the Constitution of the United States. Simply put, delay under the circumstances is still better than nothing.
  • What a disappointing news to the Republicans! They must be very busy for the next few days to work out new election strategies.
