London: Scottish Flag Raised Over Downing Street

The Scottish flag was hoisted over Downing Street on Tuesday as Prime Minister David Cameron launched a fresh push to stop Scots voting for independence next week, although it fell down on the first attempt.

 

The blue and white saltire made it halfway up the flagpole above Cameron's office before it slipped down, but it is now in place and will remain there until the referendum on September 18.

 

Opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband has called for public buildings across the country to raise the saltire over the coming days to show their support for the 300-year-old United Kingdom.

A teacher from Glasgow once told me that the Scots hate the English because Scotland has been ruled by westminster for so long. Others have said that the English tend to use the Union Flag as their own and forget that Scotland is part of the union. More than that say the English have an air of superiority and that everything is geared towards England as the only Sovereign nation of worth. The fact he is known around the world as King James I of England is undoubtedly a cause of emotional unrest in Scottish hearts as he was first King James the 6th of Scotland.

Prior to this Scotland was much the same as England was many years before (with the exception of northumberland amongst other border areas) in that it was very much a tribally governed area. No-one king can truely say he was King of the whole of Scotland prior to the Acts of Union as there were always small enclaves of unrest and one side against another with Scotland. The final Jacobite uprising, seen by many Scots as an English instigated conflict was infact Scot agin Scot.

So there is the history part dispelled.

The English air of superiority and waving the Union Flag as their own is another. When I was a lad growing up I used to think of the union flag as the flag of my country; The UK! I thought of myself as British first and English second. I soon learned that the Scots had no such feelings and often wondered why when a Scottish athlete was interviewed on TV they would say they had done it for Scotland why it was an English athlete would say they had done for Britain. Then it dawned on me. The scots hate the England, Britain and the UK. If you look at video footage of the 1990 world cup finals you will see in the England crowd Union Flags everywhere smattered with George Crosses. Look at similar footage from Scotland at the time and the only union flags are those from supporters of the Glasgow Rangers Look at an England match now and you will be hard pressed to see the Union flag.

Being governed from London is another precee to Scots antipathy towards the English. They feel that England is/was ruling them but the fact is that the government in London is made up of Scots, Welsh, Irash and English. Ofcourse the English contingent is the largest. England is the most populous nation of the UK so that would stand to reason but for a Scot to claim that their country is underdog in the government is completley false. Lets take a look at the recent UK government. for over ten years the whole of the UK has been ruled by a Scot, economised by a Scot and an extertionate amount of the Cabinet have been Scottish.

This brings me to the growing resentment of the Scots by the English. Years of unjust treatment by the Scots towards the English are resulting the English becoming increasingly resentful of The small nation to the North of us who seem to take English money to fuel their own goal. I do not want the Union to split but what would happen if England pulled out all of its wealth from the union and left the others to live of EU grants? I don't know, no-one does but one thing is for sure, England will be better off economically than they are now.

It is time Scotland started thanking the English for donating so much money to them and for never being atogonistic towards the Scots in living memory. Come on Scotland. Say thanks for that and leave, but don't bite the hand that feeds you!
