"there Is A Guy Near The Tree, Few Feet Away, And I Think He Is In For

"There is a guy near the tree, few feet away, and I think he is in for some exhibitionism".

I could see fear in her eyes. I was scared too. I knew, so many 'what if's and 'may be's might be going through her mind now. I held her hand and affirmed her, that we will get home safe and to stay calm.

Chennai, 10.30pm :
We were walking back after dinner, when I stopped at the ATM, while Neha waited out, talking on the phone. That is when she noticed him, and told me as soon as I got out. I took a quick look at the guy. Shabby and drunk with a cigarette on his lip, the exact portrayal of a "bad guy", in most films. I dint feel safe either.

We decided to walk on the other side of road, until we cross the bike that he was waiting on. As we shifted, the guy too started his bike and drove to our side. We kept changing sides two or three times more, until he just drove straight past us.

We were so relieved, but the empty road and fifteen minutes walk home, left us in panic of him coming back. Maybe with his friends this time.

It was the silence that scared us more.We couldn't talk anything, the only thing that ran in our minds were getting home safe. We walked as fast as we could.

The street lights were few and most were just flickering. I kept saying in mind, "Just few more steps and you will reach home Sreya..just few more steps". That's when we heard the sound of the bike, nearing us from behind. Neha held my hand tight...our steps raced with the beats of our hearts.

Being strong, at least physically, I decided to move Neha to the other side and stay on the side where the bike is approaching. I without turning back, carefully listened to the sound to figure out how near it is, and as the sound increased I prepared myself to fight back, with the only weapons I had, a parcel which had the food we bought and drafter (Drawing scale).

'Zoooooomm', the noise was getting too close and I turned towards him, his stretched hand almost touching my shoulder. I ducked, and using the drafter scale, gave a tight whack on his back. Screaming aloud in pain and trying to rub his back, he almost skid and was falling but somehow regained control and drove off.

Neha looked at me,with an expression less face ."My hand is paining Neha...I think you can loosen your hold now", I said winking at her and smiling, feeling relieved that I am safe home at last and feeling proud that I reacted.

An unforgettable incident from my 'chennai days'

Don't take it lightly as just ‘eve teasing'. It has become one of the biggest nuisance. As a woman, you have probably experienced it atleast once in your life. You are not alone. There are hundreds like us wanting to find a way out.

Taking the first step to empower yourself, is to START REACTING.
Don't just tell yourselves, "Its OK, This day will pass " or "It's OK , I will just get off the bus now, and then will never see the person who has been rubbing himself on my back the whole time in the crowded bus".
Do not let sexual harassment restrict your life. You have every right to live and work with dignity. You have every right to move about freely. It is no-ones charity, it is your basic human right.
Celebrate being a woman.
