Financial Lessons from Football

September is here and that means fall is upon us. For many of us that means that football season has arrived! The most popular sport in the U.S. also has some great lessons for our financial lives:

Salary Cap: In pro football every team has a salary cap, an amount that they are allowed to spend on player salaries. Teams that manage the salary cap well are able to retain star players and find ways to lower costs elsewhere. Teams that overspend end up having to let big time players go. Your budget works the same way. You only have a certain amount to spend. Take care of the important things first.

Game Plan: Every week coaches spend hours putting together a plan. A team without a game plan has no chance to win. If you don't have a retirement plan you can't win. No game ever goes exactly according to plan, but having one gives you a chance to reach your dreams.

Team Identity: Some teams love to play "smash mouth" football, running the ball all day. Other teams like to run the "spread" with tons of passing. Both philosophies can work, but a "smash mouth" team that tries to throw the ball all game is going to be in trouble. Teams have to stay true to their identity and so do investors.

Half-Time: Half-time may be when we go get a cold beverage, but in the locker room they are working hard. For the winning team it's a chance to analyze what is working and try to improve on it. For the trailing team it's a golden opportunity to re-group, acknowledge mistakes and create a new plan. If you're in the middle of your career you still have time. Take a Financial Wellness Assessment to see where you stand and create your new plan.

Protect the Football: The team that loses control of the football the most almost always loses the game. You must protect the football. You must protect your most important asset - your ability to earn a living. Make sure that you have enough life and disability insurance to care for your loved ones if the unthinkable happens.
No matter who your favorite team is, enjoy a great football season and have a winning financial season as well!
