In a man’s world, 34-year Manju has bravely stood her own ground. When death and hardship came into her life unannounced, there was no time to grieve and lose hope. She chose to take up the decidedly male profession of a Coolie, and has become India’s first and only woman porter in the entire North Western Railway region.

Hailing from Jaipur district’s Sunderpura village, Manju was a carefree mother of three until the untimely death of her husband, Mahadev. Mahadev worked as a porter at the Jaipur Railway station, and was the only breadwinner of the entire family. Manju took a difficult decision to step into her husband’s shoes and don his ‘No. 15’ coolie badge. She is the only lady porter in the 177 strong workforce of the Jaipur Railway Station.

For a woman to survive in all-male industry is challenging. Apart from the laborious physical task of lifting heavy loads, there are emotional and psychological consequences too. Manju reveals, “I felt embarrassed when out of sheer curiosity people came to see me pick up luggage. I was always on display. Sometimes, dealing with the heavier bags, I would stumble more times than I care to remember.”
