The AIADMK chief's close aide Sasikala too has been found guilty along with her relative Ilavarasi and Jayalalithaa's disowned foster son Sudhakaran. Special Judge John Michael D'Cunha convicted the 66-year-old AIADMK Chief in a case of owning assets to the tune Rs 66,65 crores disproportionate to her known sources of income during 1991-96 when she was chief minister for the first time.

She flew from Chennai to Bangalore this morning to attend the hearing, which took place in a makeshift court created at the Bangalore Central Jail on the outskirts of the city. The case against her is 18 years old and was filed originally by Subramanian Swamy, now a BJP leader. "I feel vindicated...she cannot recover from this loss of credibility," he said to NDTV. The case was pursued by Jayalalithaa's arch rival, the DMK, after it came to power in Tamil Nadu. Hundreds of her supporters were waiting outside the court in Bangalore; security has been increased at the offices of the DMK in Chennai and at the homes of its top leaders. The case against her accuses her of misusing her first term as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1991 to 1996 to collect assets that were vastly disproportionate to her income. The prosecution has argued that Jayalalithaa took a salary of just one rupee when she was elected Chief Minster, but used her five-year tenure to illicitly gather huge assets that added up to 66 crores. The alleged illegal wealth includes 2,000 acres of land, 30 kg of gold and 12,000 saris. Ms Jayalalithaa has denounced the case as political vendetta. She argued that the prosecution undervalued her earlier assets, ignored her income from other sources and exaggerated the value of her property. In the national election this year, her AIADMK virtually swept the state, winning 37 of 39 Lok Sabha seats. The state votes for its next government in two years. The case against her was shifted to a Bangalore court in 2001 when Jayalalithaa returned to power for the second time in 2001. A DMK leader argued that a trial in Tamil Nadu could not be unbiased while her party, the AIADMK, was governing the state.

timmy Posted September 27, 2014 Author Report Posted September 27, 2014 తమిళనాడు ముఖ్యమంత్రి జయలలిత అక్రమాస్తులు కూడబెట్టారని ప్రత్యేక న్యాయస్థానం నిర్ధారించింది. ఆదాయానికి మించిన ఆస్తుల కేసులో జయలలిత దొషేనని స్పష్టం చేసింది. కేవలం ఒక రూపాయి మాత్రమే వేతనంగా స్వీకరిస్తూ జయలలిత అంత పెద్ద స్థాయిలో ఆస్తులు ఎలా కూడబెట్టారని న్యాయస్థానం ఆశ్చర్యం వ్యక్తం చేసింది. 1996లో ఆమె అక్రమాస్తుల కేసులో తొలి ఎఫ్ఐఆర్ నమోదైంది. అనంతరం ఆమె రెండు నెలల జైలు శిక్ష కూడా అనుభవించారు. 18 ఏళ్ల సుదీర్ఘ విచారణ సాగిన ఈ కేసులో న్యాయస్థానం చివరికి జయలలితను దోషిగా నిర్థారించింది. జయలలిత ఆస్తులను 66 కోట్లుగా న్యాయస్థానం లెక్క కట్టింది. అయితే శిక్షను మధ్యాహ్నం న్యాయస్థానం ఖరారు చేయనుందని సమాచారం.
