Dear Friend, It is not as easy as you think! There are 22 official languages (at the last count) and around 400 living languages in India. While most of North India speaks Hindi or its dialects (Bhojpuri, Haryanwi, etc.), the North-East and South do not speak Hindi at all for their daily communication. While Hindi has been declared as the Official Language of India, the state of Tamil Nadu in South India has not accepted it. Their argument was/is that why should they learn a language which is of no apparent use to them. [The other three states in the South India (Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh) have adopted Hindi as one of the languages taught in schools.]

In order to circumvent this tricky situation, the union government introduced a 3-language formula under which all schools in the country were to teach 3 languages - the mother tongue or first language, English, the second language, and Hindi, the third language for the southern states and Hindi, English and a South Indian language in North Indian states. This sounded good on paper but what good is a south indian language for a north indian, as 99% of them would never have to use it in their lives? No North Indian state teaches any of the southern languages in their schools for the afore-mentioned reason.

If India is now a global force in IT industry and BPO services, and have made huge scientific advancements, it is only, repeat only, because of English language. Most of the technical and scientific data are in English language (German could be an exception). Even steadfast local language promoters like China and Japan are turning to English in a big way.

English is a global language and that is why, we Indians are sticking to it. It offers a lot of opportunities in the world, which is now a village. With proficiency in Hindi and Hindi alone, we would have remained a frog in the well!
