THE BUZZ: Author Gillian Flynn adapts her best-seller for everyone's favorite meticulous filmmaker. This is perhaps the feel-bad movie of the fall season - though who knows what's in store since both Nick and Amy Dunne are unreliable narrators, and there are reports of the screenplay diverging from its source material. The advance reviews have been rapturous and you know some sort of Oscar campaign is in the works; mainly we hope a nomination for Rosamund Pike would lead to more Hollywood opportunities for her.

Annabelle (2014)

THE BUZZ: While The Conjuring 2 is bogged down in an increasingly muddy legal situation,Annabelle, its first spin-off, looks to keep the franchise's momentum going with creepy dolls, Satanists, and a home invasion as part of its premise. Hopefully there will be someone or something in the script as compelling as Lorraine and Ed Warren -- weren't the performances by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson the key reason The Conjuring was more than a standard genre movie?

THE BUZZ: By now you might have heard that Reese Witherspoon doesn't appear on screen until after a harrowing first act in which the young central characters flee from their village and become a de facto family unit before arriving at a U.N. camp. Most of the credit the film has received has gone to director Philippe Falardeau (Monsieur Lazhar) for crafting an intelligent picture that does not shy away from any number of horrific realities, the aforementioned child actors who set the scene for the rest of the narrative, and the movie studio for putting out such a serious-minded work (even if its marketing is rather misleading). Reese will get plenty of attention for Wild in December and it's cool that she's not positioned front and centered anywhere but on the movie's poster.
