Visakhapatnam will be hit the hardest by Cyclone Hudhud

NEW DELHI:  After a brief lull as the eye of Cyclone Hudhud crossed over Visakhapatnam, heavy rain and strong winds are again battering the coastal district of Andhra Pradesh with the tail now passing over it. 

The Indian Meteorological Department or IMD said after landfall that this phase of the cyclone would bring with it "great damage potential." Relief and rescue operations in Visakhapatnam, also called Vizag, would be critical in the next few hours, IMD official LS Rathore said at a press conference. 

Hudhud hit coast with a wind speed of about 170-180 kmph, gusting to 195 kmph. The official said by 6 this evening, the cyclone would lose wind speed by half and in 12 hours, it would become a depression.

The Met department assesses that air traffic in the region should resume by Monday morning as the wind speeds would have diminished considerably by then. Air services have been suspended in the region and many trains have been canceled today.   

The Met department has said Vizag will bear the brunt of Hudhud, which will now move north and then north-east. It has rained heavily in the district and in neighbouring coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh all morning and the very heavy rain will continue. 

"The Visakhapatnam situation is very serious," K Hymavathi, the special commissioner for disaster management for Andhra Pradesh told Reuters by telephone. "Telecommunications are disrupted - even our control room is not able to operate properly. People staying in their apartments are so afraid that they are panicking and calling us," she said, confirming that Hudhud had made landfall.

Fallen trees and wreckage are strewn across the streets of Vizag. Three people were killed. One of them was killed when a tree fell on him while the second died when a wall collapsed.

More than 300,000 people have been evacuated to safer areas. 

The Met office said there will also be heavy rain over the next few days in coastal districts of south Odisha and in parts of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

2. The top windspeed as the cyclone hit land has been 195 kmph along the Andhra Pradesh coast, but it will drop to half in the next six hours, said the met department. Northern coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh are being whipped by heavy rain.
3. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu appealed to people to stay indoors. "I appeal to people in coastal districts to stay indoors even 6 hours after the cyclone's effect. Your safety is my concern," he tweeted.
4. Vizag, which has a huge naval base, will be hit the hardest, the met department said and rescue and relief operations there will be crucial in the next few hours. Aircraft should be able to fly over the area tomorrow morning, said officials.
5. Coastal Odisha is seeing slower winds, but the southern part of the area will see heavy rain, said the met department. 
6. Press Trust of India reports three people were killed in separate accidents caused by heavy rain in coastal Andhra Pradesh.
7. Strong wind and rains were reported in Vizag, where power lines have snapped, trees have been uprooted, and some roads are blocked now.
8. At least 400,000 people have been evacuated from the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
9. The evacuation effort was comparable in scale to the one that preceded Cyclone Phailin exactly a year ago, and which was credited with minimising fatalities to 53.
10. The Indian Ocean is a cyclone hot spot. Of the 35 deadliest storms in recorded history, 27 have come through the Bay of Bengal - and have landed in either India or Bangladesh.

హుదూద్ తుపాను సహాయక చర్యల్లో చురుగ్గా పాల్గొనాలని వైఎస్సార్సీపీ కార్యకర్తలకు ఆ పార్టీ అధినేత వైఎస్ జగన్ మోహన్ రెడ్డి పిలుపునిచ్చారు. ఆదివారం హైదరాబాద్ లో తుపాను తీవ్రతపై సమీక్షించిన ఆయన తుపాను నష్టాన్ని తగ్గించేందుకు చర్యలు చేపట్టాలని ఏపీ ప్రభుత్వానికి విజ్ఞప్తి చేశారు. తుపాను ప్రభావిత జిల్లాలకు చెందిన తన పార్టీ నేతలతో చర్చిస్తున్న ఆయన ఎప్పటికప్పుడు తుపాను ప్రభావంపై సమాచారం తెలుసుకుంటున్నారు. తుపానులో చిక్కుకున్న ప్రజలను కాపాడే విషయంలో వేగంగా స్పందించాలని ఈ సందర్భంగా ఆయన పార్టీ శ్రేణులకు సూచించారు.

హుదూద్ తుపాను విశాఖపై విరుచుకుపడింది. తుపాను తీరం దాటే సమయంలో పెనుగాలులు వీయడంతో విద్యుత్ స్తంభాలు నేలకొరిగాయి. చెట్లు, హోర్డింగ్ లు విరిగి పడడంతో భారీ సంఖ్యలో కార్లు దెబ్బతిన్నాయి. అపార్ట్ మెంట్ల గోడలకు పగుళ్ళు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. వర్షం ఎడతెరిపిలేకుండా కురుస్తుండడంతో ప్రజల కష్టాలు రెట్టింపయ్యాయి. ప్రాణనష్ట నివారణ నిమిత్తం శనివారం సాయంత్రం నుంచి విద్యుత్ సరఫరా నిలిపివేశారు. టెలిఫోన్ స్తంభాలు నేలకొరిగాయి. అటు, సెల్ ఫోన్ సిగ్నళ్ళకు తీవ్ర అంతరాయం ఏర్పడింది. నేవీ కమ్యూనికేషన్ వ్యవస్థ సైతం దెబ్బతిన్నది.

The dreadful cyclone Hudhud which has hit the North Andhra districts has crosssed the Visakha coast partially. As per the MeT department, it is learnt that the impact of the cyclone will be intensified further after few hours. The speed of the winds which has been slowed down at the moment will be aggressive with the speed of over 170 to 190 kms per hour within few hours. In Srikakulam at Kalingapatnam, the drastic effect of the cyclone can be seen watching the video. AP CM Chandrababu has been monitoring the situation since morning with top officials at the secretariat and told reporters in Hyderabad that the officials had no information about the updates of the cyclone as they lost access to the radar.
