U.S. advisory: India is scary Jessica Thompson  Thursday June 04, 2009

Few things make me feel less secure living in India than the warden messages that come out of the American Embassy. Take as an example this latest notice, released on Tuesday:

“The United States Mission in India wishes to urgently remind all U.S. citizens resident in or traveling to India that there is a high threat from terrorism throughout India.  As terror attacks are a serious and growing threat, U.S. citizens are urged to always practice good security, including maintaining a heightened situational awareness and a low profile.

"Americans in India should be vigilant at all times and monitor local news reports and vary their routes and times in carrying out daily activities. Americans should consider the level of security present when visiting public places, including religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment and recreation venues.”

In other words, just stop doing anything and don’t leave your apartment and you’ll be fine. Thanks for the heads up, government!

It’s one thing when the government has some specific information to convey to its citizens living abroad, like recent warden messages on violence in Punjab or safety precautions during the elections. The more information the better, and it’s a worthwhile service when it enhances preparedness and knowledge.

A vague warning of impending doom achieves neither. The main accomplishment of such a mysterious message can only be to freak people out unnecessarily, and make them feel helpless and scared. After all, what can a person do to prepare, mentally and otherwise, for a threat that is imminent, ominous and totally unpredictable? That’s right, pretty much nothing, other than maybe worry a little bit more.

I would like to know if other embassies here in Delhi have sent out similar memos. Is it just the Americans being paranoid?

Here is the reply of INDIAN govt

ndia is safe to visit, the government says, after the US warned its citizens of a terror threat across the country.

Home Minister P Chidambaram was angered by a message on the US embassy website alerting US citizens to "a high threat from terrorism throughout India".

"India is a completely safe country," Mr Chidambaram said, adding that his government would ask the US authorities to withdraw the warning.

A US embassy spokesman in Delhi described the advisory as "routine".

The US state department issued similar advisories in February and in the immediate aftermath of last November's Mumbai (Bombay) attacks.

'Be vigilant'

Mr Chidambaram said he did not think there was "any justification" for the advisory.

"We will certainly ask the Ministry of External Affairs to speak to the United States to withdraw that advisory," he told reporters in the capital, Delhi.

"India is a safe place - it's safer than many other countries of the world. Thousands of tourists come to India and we look forward to welcoming them."

Brian Ferinden, assistant press officer at the US embassy in Delhi, said the advisory was "routine".

He could not say whether it was based on any new information.

The message on the embassy website read: "The United States mission in India wishes to urgently remind all US citizens resident in or travelling to India that there is a high threat from terrorism throughout India.

"Americans in India should be vigilant at all times and monitor local news reports and vary their routes and times in carrying out daily activities.

"Americans should consider the level of security present when visiting public places, including religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment and recreation venues."
