Manikanta fire works, a firecracker manufacturing unit in Vakatippa witnessed a major fire accident in the afternoon on monday at 3 pm. There were some customers along with the workers of the unit at the spot when the accident happened.
Around 15 persons died and 11 more were seriously injured. Most of the dead were women. The injured were shifted to Kakinada Government Hospital. The number of deaths is likely to increase. The details of the victims are yet to be announced.
The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Chandra Babu expressed his condolences. He announced an ex gratia of 2 lakh rupees to the bereaved families.
The district collector Nitu Prasad, Pitapuram MLA and kakinada MP Thota Narsimam reached the accident spot to take care of the proceedings.
