Srisailam power generation fuels tension between Andhra, Telangana

Power generation at the Srisailam hydroelectric power station has become the latest bone of contention between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, already tangled in various issues of power sharing.

It all began with a reported request by AP to Telangana to stop the generation at Srisailam left bank power station, in view of the future requirements of AP.

Earlier in the day, AP Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu reportedly directed the authorities to stop generation at the Right Bank power station, in view of the drinking water requirements of Rayalaseema region. This order came after an MP from Rayalaseema had registered his protest over the unrestrained power generation on both sides.

However, Telangana Irrigation Minister T.Harish Rao categorically denied any request from AP, and said there is no question of stalling the power generation from Left Bank, in view of the hardships faced by the Telangana farmers. “AP government is aiming to store water for second crop, while our first crop itself lacks water,” he said. However, the Telangana government would consider the request if AP agrees to supply 350 MW of power in lieu of the generation forgone, he said.  :police:  :police:  :police:

Power generation on the left bank of Srisailam project began a week ago, after the collapse of two units of NTPC Simhadri project, owing to the destruction wreaked by Cyclone Hudhud on Visakhapatnam. In no time, APGENCO too began to operate the units on the right bank, to meet its own power needs. Since then, power generation has been in full swing on both banks, thereby depleting the water in the reservoir. On Saturday, the storage was reduced to 112.97 cusecs, at 862 feet, sources informed. A total of 76,522 cusecs of water was released to Nagarjunasagar.
