GUNTUR : A car race by a group of engineering students on the busy NH-9 near Edlapadu village of Guntur district on Sunday ended in a crash leading to the death of a student and injuring eight others, including the son of a TDP legislator from Krishna district. 

The MLA's son was involved in a similar bike racing about a month ago near Vijayawada which had made news after villagers lodged a complaint with the police. The police had then let off the students with a warning. This time, the youth went up to Chilakaluripet, 60 km away, to participate in car racing. 

Sources said the two cars that collided with each other were completely mangled. The deceased student was identified as Vijay Nagendra, 21, of Krishnalanka in Vijayawada city. 

All the injured were rushed to various private hospitals in Vijayawada. Locals said the students were indulging in car racing on the six-lane highway from Sunday afternoon and met with the fatal accident at the end of the day. 

Edlapadu police reached the spot and rescued the injured victims. 

Although the police registered a case and noted down the names of the injured students, the list did not contain the name of the MLA's son. Police claimed they had noted down all the names of students present at the scene of accident. Sources, however, said the MLA's son was rushed to a private super-specialty hospital in Vijayawada.

MLA Bonda Uma clarified that his son was never involved in bike or car racing. The media alleged that the son of the legislator and his friends were engaged in car race when they met with an accident near Chilakaluripet. A case was filed against Bonda Uma Maheswara Rao's son Siddharth along with 7 others. The legislator told that his son was on his way to some private programme when the accident happened. He remarked that the allegation was ridiculous. He added that the death of his son's friend in the accident was unfortunate.
