HYDERABAD: In an effort to provide fresh vegetables to people at their doorstep, the Andhra Pradesh government is planning to start mobile rythu bazaars in all its cities and towns. Initially they would be launched on trial basis in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati and later extended to all municipal corporations.

The TDP in its earlier stint in the late 90s started the concept of Rythu Bazaar and later on the Congress government developed the concept and even started mobile rythu bazaar in Hyderabad, which was quiet  successful.

The Telangana government has recently launched a similar scheme ‘Mana Vooru, Mana Kuragayalu’ in Hyderabad.

As part of its initiative the state government is planning to start a mobile van service through which high quality fresh vegetables would be supplied to people.

‘‘Graded vegetables of all varieties will be made available in the lanes and bylanes of the cities through mobile vans,’’ a senior official of marketing department said.

The proposal has been sent to the finance department for consideration. Each vehicle would cost Rs  2.8 lakh and given to two beneficiaries per vehicle under hire purchase scheme, the official said.

The horticulture department would supply polyhubs, shadow nets for sensitive vegetation and provide drip irrigation facilities to the farmers, he added.

The project is being worked out in association with horticulture department which would encourage farmers to develop clusters near the cities so that they could save transport cost and reach the destination at the earliest.

‘’This will help in keeping the prices of vegetables under control and provide market for the vegetable growers,’’ the official said.

The mobile vans would pick up stocks from the wholesale market on daily basis and the  prices of the vegetables would be fixed by the marketing department as per the prevailing rates.

However, the mobile vans users would be allowed to charge additional Rs 2 per kg on all vegetables as surcharge to meet their expenses and profit. ‘’The prices will be a little higher than those at Rythu Bazaars but the vegetables can be bought at one’s doorstep,’’ the official said.

The vans will have latest weighing scales which would give bills irrespective of quantity and the sales would reach the marketing headquarters instantly. There will not be any quantitative restriction on the retail sale.
