Germany followed in 1896. New York became the first state in the US to require automobile license plates on this date in 1901. Two years later, Massachusetts and West Virginia became the first states to produce government-issued plates. Prior to that, the owner of the automobile had to have his own tags made. The color and decorative design of license plates vary state by state, and some states have even begun to put the address of the official state website on the plate. People may pay an extra fee for a vanity plate, customized for the owner of the car.
