Buy Sand Online In Andhra From November

HYDERABAD: Come November, people can buy sand online in Andhra Pradesh and no longer be at the mercy of the sand mafia that ruled the roost for decades with the support of political bosses. The entire process of sand mining and supply was finalised in a meeting chief minister N Chandrababu had with chief secretary I Y R Krishna Rao and officials of industry, mining and society of the elimination of the rural poverty (SERP) here on Monday.

In what is considered to be the first of its kind in the country, consumers can deposit money as per the rate fixed by the government in the designated banks and take the receipt. Using the receipt and their Aadhaar card, customers can book sand from any Mee Seva centre or IKP-SERP website, following which the sand would be given from a site closest to the buyer's place of residence. A consumer who has booked the sand can also track the movement of the consignment through a GPS tracker.

"The state government has entered into an MoU with five banks - Andhra Bank, State Bank of India, State Bank of Hyderabad, Syndicate Bank and Indian Bank. These banks will open a separate account for sand mining," said sources. The rates of sand will be finalised in a couple of days.

The mining and sale of sand has been entrusted to self-help groups (SHG) as part of the campaign Pedarikam Pai Gelupu (Triumph Over Poverty). According to sources, Naidu directed officials to start sand mining in the identified reaches immediately after he expressed satisfaction over the pilot project taken up in East Godavari district, where 1.9 lakh cubic metres of sand have been excavated.

"Women's groups have sold about 40,000 cubic metres of sand, which fetched Rs 2.95 crore. Twenty per cent of the amount will go to the women's groups and the remainder to the soon-to-be-set-up women empowerment corporation," sources said. The women empowerment corporation, which will be on the lines of the Rytu Sadhikara Samstha created last week, will monitor all the activities related to empowerment of women in the state.

Of the 81 identified sand reaches in the state, sale has begun at 70. Eleven reaches (four in Odisha, one in Karnataka, four in Puducherry and two in Telangana) are inter-state sharing sites. To mine the sand from these reaches, Naidu will soon write to his counterparts in Odisha, Karnataka, Puducherry and Telangana for clearance. "The sand mining and the disposal of the sand at the nearby stock points will be monitored through close circuit cameras. The rate of the sand will be uniform though out the state," sources told TOI.
