Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has set the stage for increasing revenues by planning a  hike in  various category of taxes and prices. Officials have been asked to prepare proposals and place them before the Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on Thursday.

The Cabinet is likely to approve  hike in land registration charges, which is presently four per cent, apart from hike in gift deeds, settlement deeds and conversion of agricultural land to commercial, levy of green cess, entry tax on goods vehicles, setting up of new distilleries in AP and increasing the capacity of existing distilleries  to name a few.

Mr Naidu asked the officials to identify areas where taxes can be raised without burdening the common man and increasing  revenues, keeping in view the loss caused by Hudhud cyclone and revenue deficit of Rs 17,000 crore.

At a meeting with the heads of the department, Mr Naidu was informed that revenue in the first and second quarters of the current fiscal year had grown by 13.86 per cent.

Revenue department officials said that the increase in commercial taxes in the first quarter of the current fiscal year stood at 5.96 per cent as it rose from Rs 5,858.31 in the first quarter of  the last fiscal year  to Rs 6,207.41 crore in the corresponding  quarter this year.

Mr Naidu  asked the revenue department to explore setting up Economic Intelligence Units on the lines of Maharashtra government to store and interpret data of the sales tax department digitally.
