siru Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 cool bro .. So , technically if a guy converts to hinduism then the brahmin can decide abt the caste that he belongs to ? "Caste" as in olden days "occupation" Not todays castes.. So that theory if brahmin deciding caste is not applied now

donganaaK Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 "Caste" as in olden days "occupation" Not todays castes.. So that theory if brahmin deciding caste is not applied now how does it not apply ? .... if a guy converts to Hinduism , he has to be assigned to some cast right ? ... he cannot be just a hindu without any cast i think ..
gargicau Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 cool bro .. So , technically if a guy converts to hinduism then the brahmin can decide abt the caste that he belongs to ? lol. he doesn't have to belong to any caste. I was talking about brahmins of 100s of years ago. To make the point that caste and hierarchy was fluid. and castes moved up and down the varna chain based on their occupation. Some even becoming brahmin caste. Its like a game of thrones. One group declares itself a kshatriya, and gets a few others to nod, and lo behold, they are kshatriya. Same with brahmin. Even in british records, several castes which now claim BC status were proudly something else.

gargicau Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 i get the history part that u are talking abt bro .... my doubt is abt present gen converts .. They don't have to belong to any caste. lets assume over several years, some 10000 of them have converted to Hinduism, Hindus will start calling them by some common name. That'll probably attach as the caste name to them. who knows.
gargicau Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 I am always puzzled as to what makes one a Hindu? There are no hindu scriptures... The scriptures we have are Based on Sanatana Dharma..And those scriptures guide us on how to lead our life.. even if we were to adapt sanatana dharma as hinduism.. I bet 99% of "hindus" dont follow the scriptures.. So how can we be called hindus when we dont obey what was written? you can call yourself Hindu, if you follow some of the rituals mentioned in the scriptures. Hindus, because they are splintered as caste groups, haven't agreed on what part to follow and what not to. And thats a good thing. Keeps them from becoming like Muslims, who kill each other over discussion on prophet's lineage.

alpachinao Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 how can some one "convert" to hinduism .... I think its more like a way of life than a religion ..even our supreme court ruled that its a way of life http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Hinduism-is-a-way-of-life-SC/articleshow/1087322.cms there is no religious of converting hindu....
gargicau Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 how does it not apply ? .... if a guy converts to Hinduism , he has to be assigned to some cast right ? ... he cannot be just a hindu without any cast i think .. may be some caste group will adopt him by giving him their daughter. Otherwise he has to practice his rituals alone. Its all informal only. most people convert to Hinduism, because its their spouse's religion or because they are interested in it spiritually. In the second case, caste is a hindrance anyway.
gargicau Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 there is no religious of converting hindu.... by that yardstick, there's no such thing as hindu at all.
Silver_mani Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 Music Composer Yuvan Shankar Raja's official Islamic name is Abdul Haliq ... oj oj part of name ??
