Information technology services provider Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. on Wednesday said it would invest over Rs.500 crore to expand its operations in Hyderabad. The Nasdaq-listed Cognizant’s expansion plans in Hyderabad will be a shot in the arm for the Telangana government that has been trying to resurrect the city’s image that has taken a beating following statehood protests over the past five years. Telangana became India’s 29th state in June after it was formally separated from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. Cognizant will add 1.5 million square feet space to the existing 225,000 square feet at its 11-acre campus in the Gachibowli locality of Hyderabad. The expanded facility will accommodate 8,000 people when it’s completed, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. “Cognizant’s investment in Hyderabad underscores our commitment to grow our operations in the city and tap into the region’s best-in talent,” Lakshmi Narayan, vice-chairman of Cognizant said in the statement. Cognizant began its operations in 2002 with a workforce of 180 people. It currently has 18,000 professionals working out of its five Hyderabad offices—one self-owned and four leased. “Our Hyderabad centre is an important part of our integrated global delivery capability and represents our continued success in hiring the best talent to support our ever expanding range of services, industries, and geographies,” Narayan said. Cognizant, which earned $2.52 billion revenues in the latest quarter, provides consulting, enterprise applications, IT infrastructure, and business process services.
