Borobudur Temple, Indonesia

Borobudur is a very large Temple (The world’s biggest Buddhist temple) located in Magelang which is about 500 kilometers south east to the capital city, Jakarta (Central Java, Indonesia). The temple is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia with millions of visitors every year. The temple was built during the 9th century and was abandoned around the 14th century when Islam started to dominate the region though some believe it had more to do more with a series of volcanic eruptions which made life harder around Magelang. The location of the temple was forgotten for centuries and was rediscovered deep in the jungle in 1814, many excavations undertaken in the area of the temple since the 19th century and some restoration work was made. in the 1980’s Borobudur Temple was recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
