Monorail From Tirupati To Tirumala

 <sup>If the proposal takes concrete shape, then the day will not be far off when devotees can go up from Tirupati to Tirumala in a monorail. A feasibility report to this effect was sent by Tirupati Urban Development Authority (Tuda) to the Union urban development ministry last month. If cleared by the Centre, a detailed project report will be prepared. 

At a cost of nearly Rs 9,000 crore, the monorail has been proposed from the RTC bus station in Tirupati to Tirumala. The rail will come up along the ghat trek route and the 27 km distance can be covered in 25 to 30 minutes as against the one hour and 45 minutes it currently takes for the RTC bus and private vehicles respectively. 

Stations have been proposed at RTC bus station, Alipiri and Kapilatheertham from where the devotees can enter the temple premises for darshan. "Monorail may not drastically reduce the travel time from Tirupati to Tirumala, but it will practically minimize the accidents on the ghat road," said sources.</sup>

<sup>Around 60,000 devotees visit Tirumala every day for darshan with the walking route taking about 5 hours for the devotee to reach his destination. The monorail can ferry about 300 passengers at a time. The proposal is part of the Tirupati Master Plan and is being clubbed with the smart city initiative proposed by the Narendra Modi government. 

Decades ago, a proposal was put forth by Indian railway company, RITES, to construct a cable car link from Tirupati to Tirumala. However, it was shelved later. Tuda sources said they are expecting the Centre to act soon on the proposal sent by them to the Union urban development ministry which is headed by minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who hails from Andhra Pradesh.</sup>
