'robbed' Of Loan Waiver, Tulluru Farmers Wary Of Land Pooling

VIJAYAWADA: Farmers in the proposed Andhra Pradesh capital region are putting up a strong resistance to the AP government's plans of land pooling as many of them were recently declared ineligible for farm loan waiver.

After coming to power in June, the Chandrababu Naidu government appointed an experts' committee to formulate guidelines for implementation of the waiver scheme. After dilly-dallying for about two months, the experts committee submitted its report in August, after which the government issued a GO.

However, the government kept on amending the guidelines of the scheme, finally eliminating all horticulture crops from the waiver benefit. "Most of the farmers in Tulluru mandal cultivate horticulture crops and they lost the benefit due to the mindless regulation," criticised K Seshagiri Rao of Mandadam village.

Sources said farmers growing horticulture crops had borrowed loans totaling Rs 6 crore, while those growing paddy and other crops secured loans worth Rs 5 crore. Besides losing the waiver benefit, these farmers are now forced to pay Rs 14,000 interest on every Rs 1 lakh loan due to the delay in repayment, said another farmer Sambasiva Rao.

"The government failed to keep up its loan waiver promise. How can farmers believe that the government will keep up its word on land pooling scheme if they part with their fertile lands?" wonders Mallela Harindranath Chowdary, a local farmer leader.  :3D_Smiles_38:  :3D_Smiles_38:
