HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, who is on a three-day business trip to Singapore, spent the first day on Wednesday exploring the vision and theme of Singapore city and its great signature structures and projects.

The important engagement on Wednesday was his visit to Marina Sand Skypark, Marina Bay and Singapore Ports Authority (SPA). Since Naidu has a grand vision of converting Andhra Pradesh into a ports and tourism hub, he discussed with Singapore officials how the city-state had become an eminently liveable place in the world. According to K Lakshminarayana, director of APSSDC and member of the CM's delegation, Naidu's meetings on Wednesday were basically exploratory in nature.

"The Singapore officials explained to Naidu the themes that went into the designing and implementing of integrated business and entertainment projects in the city-state without disturbing the ecological balance. At SPA, port officials briefed the chief minister about the functioning of the port which has emerged as perhaps the most important maritime hub in the eastern world," Lakshminarayana told TOI from Singapore.

To understand river management in the citystate, the AP CM had a taste of the Singapore River Cruise from Clarke Quay into Marina Bay. According to sources, Naidu, who is exploring promoting night business and entertainment activity in the emerging capital of Andhra Pradesh on the banks of river Krishna, carefully examined the Clarke Quay, which is home to several restaurants and brims with life in the nights. He also examined the Singapore River Clean-up system and development of Singapore River, the sources said. Naidu's schedule began with a meeting with S Iswaran, second minister of trade and industry of Singapore, where both leaders exchanged views on developing trade-business relations between Andhra Pradesh and Singapore.

"Naidu explained to Iswaran the vast opportunities available in Andhra Pradesh. The AP CM basically delved on the proposal of developing a string of ports along the 1000 km long coast of the state. He also explained to the Singapore minister about the availability of 24x7 power, rail and road network and huge pool of technical manpower in the state," Lakshminarayana said.

Later, Naidu visited the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) where he had a meeting with Lim See Keng, executive director of the centre.

While Naidu shared his vision of development of mega cities and smart cities in Andhra Pradesh with Lim, the latter explained to the CM the philosophy that governs the CLC. Referring to the mission of CLC, Lim said the centre was keen to share Singapore's experience in building the city over the past half a century and successfully meet the challenges thrown up by urbanization, the official said. Khoo Teng Chye, another expert at CLC, explained about the best urban planning practices adopted in the city-state. "Singapore has taken some of the best measures to conserve and manage drinking water.

The CM studied their integrated efforts to minimize solid waste through recycling, purchase of recycled products and provision of waste audits," a note issued by the AP CMO said. Naidu also met experts from the Public Utilities Board (PUB), which is the sole body responsible for the collection, production, distribution and reclamation of water in the city. Apart from the members of the AP delegation, India's high commissioner Vijaya Thakur Singh also accompanied Naidu to some meetings.

good.. I hope he don't do the same mistake as last time ignoring farmers

Contrary to the claims of CM Y S Rajasekhara Reddy that AP is farmer-friendly, nearly 1,800 farmers committed suicide after the Congress government came to power. This is more than the 1,519 suicides of farmers recorded in the state between July 1998 and May 14, 2004.
