SINGAPORE: The Republic moved a step forward in its plans to help the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh build its new capital city on Friday (Nov 14).

Second Trade and Industry Minister S Iswaran said the executive director of the Centre for Liveable Cities Khoo Teng Chye has been nominated to be a part of the state's Capital City Advisory Committee. He added that Singapore is looking forward to a long and close partnership with Andhra Pradesh.

"What role Singapore companies can play in that regard, this is something that we are focusing on, to see how best we can calibrate Singapore's involvement in the way that it is meaningful to the Andhra Pradesh and Indian government, and at the same time beneficial to our business interests," said Mr Iswaran.

Mr Iswaran was at the 9th Institute of South Asian Studies International Conference, which was also attended by Andhra Pradesh's Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu.

Mr Iswaran said Singapore has had good relations with the old Andhra Pradesh, especially the capital Hyderabad. He noted how under Mr Naidu's leadership, the city had transformed into a modern capital and an information technology hub.

Andhra Pradesh now needs a new capital city, after a recent division to create the new state of Telegana.

Mr Iswaran said Mr Naidu and his team have shown "much thought into where and how they wish to work with Singapore". In his keynote address at the conference, Mr Naidu said the new city will be a place of opportunities.

Mr Naidu noted: "It is a lifetime opportunity for me. It is a legacy for Andhra Pradesh which is going to be created by me.

"It is also a one-time opportunity for Singapore. You may construct some buildings, some townships, some ventures, you can do anything,  but constructing a capital is unique. It is a one-time opportunity, it will be an icon for Singapore.

“We want to create a dynamic, robust city which is economically sustainable and also which is able to create wealth for its people."
