Susan Xiao-Ping Su, the woman who founded Tri-Valley University in Pleasanton, California in 2008, was finally convicted and sentenced to 16 years. The 44-year-old con artist linked her name to 31 counts of wire and mail fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to commit visa fraud among other charges.Tri-Valley University started with just 11 students with visas up to 939 in just a year in 2010. This was after the feds found out that the fake university facilitated illegal immigration documents including F1 visas.

With the enlightening but fake Christian school’s motto, “Let the light shine”, hundreds of mostly Indian students were faced with deportation after the Tri-Valley University was forced to be shut down by US authorities. Foreign students, who are mostly from India, were interrogated by the ICE.  Adding to their despair, some students were radio tagged to monitor their movements, a move the Indian government protested as treating the students who had been tricked by TVU’s promoters like common criminals.

It all started when reports of some irregularities at the so-called Tri-Valley University reached the feds. Homeland Security then abruptly ended her heartless scheme in January 2011, raiding her Residence at Pleasanton, California. In the end, Susan Xiao-Ping Su was ordered to forfeit $5.6 million dollars in addition to the payment of at least $900,000 in restitution.

Promising a challenging and quality degrees in medicine, engineering and even law for international students, the Tri-Valley University instead raised awareness for fraudulence. For over 2 years, the scam of Susan Xiao-Ping Su was unnoticed, and this was because of some involvement within the faculty. Several of them even testified that the university didn’t require any legal documents for admission or graduation and that the president, Su Xiao-Ping Su, usually instructed them to forge transcripts. Three professors on the other hand stated that their credentials were used without their authority.

With all the unfortunate events, it has led the AIFS (All India Students Federation) to a mass demonstration near the US Consulate in the city of Hyderabad, India. It then resulted to the detainment of some members of the organization.  It just goes to show how one person can change the thoughts and actions of a community for better, or worst. While it’s all good she is now facing a 16-year prison time, the damage was done and severe to say the least, as it involved a thousand students losing precious time and scarring their hopes and dreams.
