HYDERABAD: An unidentified man armed with an assault rifle tried to kidnap Aurobindo Pharma vice chairman K Nityananda Reddy early on Wednesday outside KBR Park, frequented by the city's who's who in upscale Banjara Hills. He escaped after the attempt failed, firing several shots from his AK-47. While Reddy was unscathed after a fight-back with the attacker, the assailant fled leaving the rifle behind, police said.

The attack occurred when Reddy returned to his Audi that stood around 200 metres from the park’s main entrance after his morning walk.

The attack prompted security experts to question how the AK-47 landed with the man. A CCTV camera at the park's entrance is malfunctioning and security is slack, they said. Former chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy had left the park minutes before the attack. Earlier, there used to be a police picket at the park's entrance, but policemen were nowhere to be seen when the attack took place.
