Footage filmed by a bystander shows Eric Garner being wrestled to the ground in a chokehold by an NYPD officer before turning limp. The father, 43, can be heard gasping 'I can't breathe'. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Protests have erupted in New York after a grand jury failed to indict the officer responsible 

 

Thousands of demonstrators poured out in cities across the country on Thursday in a show of outrage over a grand jury’s decision the previous day not to indict a white New York City police officer whose chokehold caused an unarmed black man’s death.

 

The protests drew crowds in New York, Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh and beyond. Many chanted the last words of the man, Eric Garner, 43, of Staten Island: “I can’t breathe.” In some places, the demonstrators disrupted traffic and laid down in the streets. Protests in New York shut down the Brooklyn-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge as a growing number of demonstrators marched from Lower Manhattan. There, a crowd at Foley Square swelled to at least 2,000, filling the park, spilling into the streets and blocking a subway entrance at Chambers Street. The participants chanted, “No justice, no peace, no racist police.”
