HYDERABAD: Inspired by none other than US President Barack Obama, the Hyderabad police have decided to go hi-tech with its surveillance and monitoring mechanism. A week after Obama, in the wake of the race-related clashes in the city of Ferguson, decided to provide 50,000 body cameras to American cops so that there is a definitive record of their policing activities, the city cops too are to be armed with about 100 such sophisticated GPRS-enabled body wear cameras.

According to sources, tenders have already been floated for procuring 100 body cameras. Each camera, costing about Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh, will have a very high resolution and have a microphone attached to it. The cameras will be equipped with GPS, GPRS and Wi-Fi technology, which will enable them to send live feed to the main server in the command and control centre. The camera set-up also consists of a data storage feature, which would come handy in case of data transmission failure
As of now, police are using three body wear cameras in the city on a pilot basis. Three sub inspectors of Gopalpuram, Charminar and Saifabad traffic police stations have been wearing the camera during enforcement work.

"Sometimes when we stop an offender for violations like cell phone driving or signal jumping, he claims to be innocent and creates a scene on the road. Now when I show the body camera and prove him wrong, all such offenders quietly pay the challan. Since I started wearing the camera, the rude behaviour of the offenders has come down drastically," Charminar traffic SI, S Ravi Kumar, told TOI. The cameras are also acting as a check on corruption on the part of the cops as their interaction with civilians is being monitored by the command centre.

If you are one of those who refrains from paying challans or tries to bribe a traffic policeman, then watch out. As part of new-age policing in Hyderabad, traffic police will be geared up with special body wearable cameras.
These cameras record the conversation and visuals between a traffic policeman and general public and will work as crucial evidence. The high resolution audio-visual can also be seen live from the police control room.
"People just argue and do not pay fine. Everything will now get recorded," said Ravi Kumar,a traffic inspector.

Not just body wearable cameras, but in a first of its kind plan in India, traffic policemen in Hyderabad will soon be given iPads and tablets with a special application installed. The application aims to create a data bank to catch hold of repeated offenders.
"This app saves all details in one server, one can immediately see how many times the same crime is committed," said traffic inspector Narsing Rao.
The police even plans to connect this project to the anti-drunk driving campaign. This means a repeated offender's driving licence can be cancelled. The police believe that the use of technology will bring in transparency and accountability in policing.
The traffic police is also working towards non-contact enforcement by increasing the number of surveillance cameras. Many a times people complain that police are not doing their duty and take bribe. On the other hand policemen also blame people for throwing their weight around and not obeying rules. Certainly, technology will help in bring transparency, reduce corruption and will ensure everyone follows the rules.
 
Unfortunately Hyderabad Police do not have strong supporters who can make PPTs and release in the public to get noticed,in the days of fake US consulate news was made look a real news to the herds !
