A Loyola University student from Pakistan who was shot to death Friday evening when two attackers tried to rob him and his brother in the Rogers Park neighborhood has been identified, authorities said.

Mutahir Rauf, 23, of the 1400 block of West Pratt Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m. on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

The shooting happened during an attempted robbery around 7:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of West Albion Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood, a block away from the university's campus, said Chicago police spokesman Thomas Sweeney.

The 23-year-old student was walking with his brother in the area when two attackers walked up to them, according to 49th Ward Ald. Joe Moore and police. One of the attackers pulled a gun and ordered them to turn over their money, Moore said.

The victim allegedly believed the gun was a toy and reached for it. During the scuffle, the gun went off and the assailant fled, according to Moore.


 

 

The student was fatally shot in the chest and head and  as pronounced dead at the scene, Sweeney said. The student's brother was reportedly not injured.
