New Delhi: Harassment of women in public transport is a growing menace. The tragic rape and murder of the Delhi braveheart in a moving bus was an incident that shook the nation. In an effort to stop such incidents and to ensure safety of women, the city buses in Hyderabad have been revamped.

In a major makeover, the State Road Transport Corporation in Hyderabad has started putting up sliding doors which separate the men and women's section in the city buses.

Women commuters are breathing a sigh of relief over the initiative. "This is a great initiative. Drunk men would enter the bus and push us. It was very difficult to travel but we now feel safe," a woman commuter said.

Others too echo the sentiment and hail the decision. "For the past two years, I have been travelling in this bus. I think it is a good facility by the government. It is very uncomfortable for us when drunkards come and fall on us," another commuter said.

Female commuters had often complained of men often occupying seats reserved for women on buses. They had also raised voices against inebriated men who board the buses and misbehaved. The decision to put up the partition was taken was taken to avoid any inconvenience caused to women commuters, say authorities.

While partitions have only been put up in a few buses initially, the plan is in place for all buses in Hyderabad to be divided into two sections to ensure safe travel for women.

The day-to-day women commuters who feel most unsafe in public transport are welcoming this step with a hope that this initiative will help in ensuring safety for them.
