Wonderla To Set Foot In Hyderabad With Water Theme Park

Buoyed by a growth in revenue between 25 and 30 per cent and with footfall charting an upward curve on the graph, Wonderla, the brand under which Wonderla Holidays showcases its water theme and amusement park, will soon start work on its venture here with an investment of Rs. 210 crore.

Arun Chittilappilly, Executive Director said they were all set to roll with the construction work on a 55-acre site beyond the international airport on the outskirts of the State Capital beginning from April. Admitting that their plans were delayed with the general strike for a separate Telangana, he said the new project would be Wonderla's biggest, both in terms of investment and the facilities to be offered.

He told The Hindu that while Veegaland, Kochi had 50 land and water games, Wonderla, Bangalore offered 54 games. Soon a resort would be added in Bangalore, making it an overnight attraction too, he said. Wonderla is part of the group that initially was popular for its V-Guard stabiliser, he recalled.

Elaborating on the company's choice of Hyderabad for an over Rs. 200-crore investment, he said that year-on-year, footfall in existing amusement parks across the country was on the rise. “We found we had a lot to offer here, a place with an interesting mix of people in the IT, BT, Pharma and other sectors from across India who could do with entertainment-with-the-family-kind,” Mr. Arun said.

“As of now we only have games and relaxation for families from dawn till dusk, but soon we will have overnight stays too. We expect to have atleast 60-plus games for the entire family in the Hyderabad park,” he said. The company had made a mark for itself in safety and hygiene and Wonderla's parks are OHSAS 18001:2007 certified, according to an international safety hygiene standard, he stated, also stating that it was the only park in the country to use reverse osmosis water treatment technology.

The company started with Veega Land, Kochi in the year 2000 and added Wonder La in Bangalore by 2005, expects to complete the fiscal 2011-12 with a footfall of 21 lakh visitors, taking the total to 1.5 crore. Revenue was expected to touch Rs. 110 crore, he added. The amusement parks sector in India is currently pegged at Rs. 7,000 crore with 120 parks, of which less than 20 can be classified as ‘very big', including Essel World.
