Tm Krishna Walks The Talk.

In Chennai, every December, there's a music & dance festival that celebrates its high cultural achievements.

I have only watched it on TV, and something struck me as odd when I heard that last year one of the superstars of Carnatic music world, TM Krishna, surprised everyone when he stopped mid performance to talk about how carnatic music should reach everybody, and not restrict itself to certain spaces, addressing only a certain class.

Needless to say, there was a silent backlash among the Chennai crowd to this suggestion, although many praised TM Krishna's guts to open up about elitism in front of the most elitist crowd in Chennai, in the elitist of places.

Well this year, TM Krishna has given Marghazi festival a miss, and arranged to have one of his own in the more accessible parts of chennai.

There's no doubt that Carnatic music has to give way to other forms for people from these parts of Chennai to take interest in it. I just hope its not stupid film music.

It'll be with great interest I'll be watching this festival. and I hope it turns out to be the start of a great fusion music festival in Chennai.

Yay! for TM Krishna. Lets have something unique and accessible to everybody in Chennai.
