India has launched our heaviest rocket till date. As the GSLV Mark III was successfully launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, scientists clapped and hugged each other in celebration.

The GSLV Mk III was conceived and designed to make India fully self reliant in launching heavier communication satellites of INSAT-4 class, which weigh 4500 to 5000 kg. It also enhances the capability of the country to be a competitive player in the multimillion dollar commercial launch market.

Even more importantly, with the launch of the GSLV Mark III, the ISRO has carried out a human crew module experiment. The crew module is the cabin in which astronauts are housed during space journey. With this launch, the ISRO has successfully tested the ability of the CREW module to re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere with thermal resistance, parachute deployment in cluster formation, aero braking system and apex cover separation procedures.

The success of the launch is a core achievement for the future Human Space Project.

A few years back ISRO had carried out a similar experiment on a smaller scale in which the module had orbited around the earth for 15 days before entering back.
