I wouldnt suggest it. go for an x3 instead. I know budget is a concern. Other options would be to go for a Honda/Camry/Mazda.

BMW X1......! it is based on the same platform of BMW 3 series....! I would call it a station wagon rather than an SUV...! Few millimieters of high ground clearance than 3 Series...! Removed the trunk and made it like an hatch back ( extended ).

 

As others suggested space will be an issue...! It will not even give you the feel of driving an SUV......! so go for a 3series instead or if you are interested in a SUV go for X3.

 

If you are looking for a premium SUV in the 30's prize range.....! Look for Acura RDX, Audi Q3, BMW X3, Lexus NX.
