Predjama Castle

This Slovenian castle is built into the side of a mountain and under an arch as part of its defenses. It has a rather notorious history as serving as the home to a local robber baron. The castle was first mentioned in historical records in 1274; its exact age is unknown.

Mow Cop Castle

The castle’s odd name means heap-hill. There is nothing left of it now save for the folly of ruins. Visitors mostly come for the sweeping views from the castle’s hill.

Weikersheim Castle

Built in the 12th Century this stately German castle has expansive park-like grounds with marble statuary and elegant fountains. The castle has a reputation for serving as a center for arts. It’s currently home to the Jeunesses Musicales Germany during the summer months.

Tintagel Castle

Tintagel Castle rests on windswept coast of Cornwall. The remote castle-fortress lies on an island only accessible by causeway. Tintagel is best known from Arthurian legends.

Belvoir Castle

Well known for its elegant gardens, the castle overlooks 16,000 acres of forest and parkland. Standing since the time of the Normans, the castle has served as the ancestral home to the Duke and Duchess of Rutland. It is located in Leicestershire, UK.

Cite’ de Carcassonne

Although not a singular castle, it sure looks like one. Actually, Medieval Carcassonne is a fortified town in the South of France, situated on historic trade routes. Carcassonne was first built and inhabited by the Romans.

Kolossi Castle

Kolossi Castle is believed to be built around 1210 by the Franks. It stands on the Isle of Cyprus, and was once a stronghold of great military importance. The Knights Templar once captured and held the Castle for a time.

Tattershall Castle

Built between 1434 and 1147 by the Lord Treasurer of England, Ralph Cromwell, the castle is as monument to pre-Tudor Times. Its spiraling stair case, and beautiful stained glass windows are a major tourist attraction. Visitors can marvel at the views of the Lincolnshire countryside from the castle roof.

Neuschwanstein Castle

One of Germany’s newer castles. It was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Germany in 1869 and dedicated to Robert Wagner. The castle was opened to the public shortly after Ludwig’s death, and has remained a popular tourist attraction ever since.

Spangenberg Castle

This castle in Germany has played many roles from royal country residence to hunting lodge. It was used to house British prisoners of war in the 1940’s before being destroyed in an air raid. Spanengberg has since been rebuilt and is now a hotel.
