200 Mahadalits convert to Christianity in Gaya

As many as 200 Mahadalits, the poorest among Dalits, converted to Christianity at Atiya village near Bodh Gaya on Thursday, prompting Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi to seek an investigation and BJP leaders to demand a ban on such activities in Bihar. A local priest, Rajkishore, allegedly supervised the ceremony.

 

The families reportedly said they had converted for “growth and betterment in life and free education of their children.”

A resident of the village told The Hindu that conversion of Mahadalit families in the area had been going on since 2007, with no one ever creating a furore. In 2007-08, 35 families had converted and got free education for their children in the local Emmanuel Mission Public School, run by the Church of Promise.

 

Anil Manjhi, Saped Manjhi, Dhanesh Manjhi and Bhanesh Manjhi of the village told officials that they converted for the good things in life, such as free education for their children at the local missionary school, and an alcohol-free society.

 

While Mr. Manjhi sought a report from the District Magistrate, the former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed ignorance about the ceremony.

 

BJP leaders Prem Kumar and Vinod Narayan Jha said the government should investigate the issue and ban such activities. Local BJP MP Hari Manjhi visited the village on Friday to ascertain the facts.

 

Earlier, when reports of conversion of Mahadalit families to Christianity came from Bhagalpur and Munger districts, officials visited the villages, but the people denied that they had converted.

80 tribals "converted" to Christianity in Odisha

 

ROURKELA: At least 80 tribals were allegedly converted to Christianity in Balisuda village in Sundargarh district of Odisha, officials said on Saturday. 

"We have information about the alleged conversion (on December 25). I have sent there a team that consists of sub-collector of Bonai, Surendra Kumar Mina. They are investigating the case and verifying the facts...," district collector Bhupinder Singh Poonia said. 

Inspector-in-charge (IIC) M Pradhan of K Balang Police Station, who is leading the probe into this case, said "The villagers of Balisuda, led by Panduramn Munda, ward member of Darjing gram panchayat, have submitted a written complaint in this regard. It has been accepted as a station diary and we are investigating it."
