Yes, you can.

Firstly get hold of the dept which deals with financialassistance (generally big hospitals will have one ).They deal with patients who are unable to pay hospital bills (uninsured and low income families).They have a trust and will pay part or full from the fund for eligible patients

I n your case they may not give you the reprieve ,but you can negotiate to pay in installments or request them to waive a part of  the bill (as you are in some financial hardhipsmeg: loss of job etc)
