December 28th, 2014, 09:23 AM IST

Air Asia flight QZ 8501 has been reportedly missing. The flight travelling from Surabaya of Indonensia to Singapore carrying 155 people onboard, including staff, lost contact on Sunday early morning. The flight has lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control at 6.17 AM (local time). Before losing contact, the pilot had sought for an unusual route, say reports. More details are awaited.

Even before the world comes to terms with the recent incidents of flight missing and crashes, Air Asia flight is now gone missing. This is the fifth civilian plane across the globe reported to have met ill-fate in the past six months. At first Malaysian airliner MH 370 (with 239 people aboard) reported missing, followed by the shooting down of MH 17 Boeing 777 (298 people on board) , followed by crashing of an Air Algerie flight AH 5017  carrying 116 people (110 passengers, 6 crew). In August, an Iranian plane carrying 39 passengers and 9 crew aboard crashed killing all 48 people onboard.

An AirAsia Airbus A320-200 has gone missing on a flight from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore, according to the National Agency Search and Rescue Republic of Indonesia.

The plane, flight QZ8501, which reportedly had 162 people on board, lost contact at 7:24 a.m. local time near Belitung Island, Indonesia, according to a statement from AirAsia.

The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC.

Search and rescue operations were in progress, AirAsia said.

The plane lost communication with Indonesia's Surabaya airport 42 minutes after takeoff, when it was believed to be over the Java Sea between Kalimantan and Java islands, Hadi Mustofa, an official of the transportation ministry told Indonesia's MetroTV.

Mustofa said the plane had seven crew and 155 passengers.

The Singapore aviation authority said it was informed about the missing plane by Jakarta ground control about half an hour after the contact was lost.

"Search and rescue operations have been activated by the Indonesian authorities," it said.

The Singapore air force and the navy also were activated with two C-130 planes involved in the search, according to the aviation authority.

Mr Mustafa said the last communication was from the pilot asking for permission to change the height from 32,000 to 34,000 feet in the Kumai Strait near Belitung due to bad weather.

A crisis centre has been set up at Surabaya airport and relatives have begun arriving to tearfully view a full list of names of those who were on the flight.
