India is home to the largest population of the visually challenged (2011 census). The simple task of traversing a street, is not so simple for a visually challenged person. The white cane, which is a conventional mobility tool for the blind, is helpful in detecting obstacles only up to a length of 1 meter. They are also limited to the foot-level, meaning that any obstacles that are any higher than the knee or chest level, cannot be detected by the white cane.
AssisTech Labs from IIT-Delhi have given the white cane a 21st century makeover, with a device called the Smart Cane. It's designed as an attachment that can be installed on the top of any white cane. It features an ultrasonic transmitter, whose beam is used to identify presence of obstacles up to 3 meters, from knee to head height. The feedback is in form of vibrations, mainly because this type of feedback does not interfere with the hearing of the user. The device augments
the white cane's usability to a great extent. A testament to the success of the design, in terms of practicality and ease of use, comes from the reviews of early adopters of the prototypes.
Available for Rs. 3000, the Smart Cane is helping blind
people 'see' in a whole new way. This is innovation exemplified.
