Airline Sues Young Entrepreneur For Website That Finds Cheap Flights

A major airline and travel booking site are suing a young computer whiz from New York City who built a website that finds cheap airfares.

Aktarer Zaman, 22, built Skiplagged.com. The site finds deeply discounted fares by exploiting an airline practice called "hidden city" ticketing.

This is when an airline routes a flight through a layover city that actually happens to be the city you want to visit. For example, suppose you want to go to Regina. A flight from Vancouver to Saskatoon with a layover in Regina might actually be cheaper than a direct flight to Regina. So you book the cheaper trip to Saskatoon and simply get off in Regina.

As long as you're flying one-way and carrying on your baggage, you can save money.

United Airlines and travel booking website Orbitz don't appreciate Zaman's service. They are seeking $75,000 US in lost revenue, even though savvy travellers have been taking advantage of hidden-city ticketing for years.

Zaman told CNN he is merely exposing an "inefficiency." He considers Skiplagged.com a side project while he works for a New York City startup.
