Nizam Was Our Great King And A Great Secular

Hyderabad:
Unruffled by the stinging criticism of some right-wing organisations including Vishwa Hindu Parishad, a nonchalant Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao continues his public praise for Nizams, the rulers of erstwhile Hyderabad state and declared the last Nizam “a great King, though he might have committed some mistakes”.
He reminded the critics that even the government of India had honoured the Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan with the position of “Raj Pramukh” after merger of Hyderabad into the Indian union in 1948.
The latest round of tribute to Nizam came while the chief minister was inaugurating the 75th edition of All India Industrial Exhibition in Hyderabad, which was founded by the Nizam government as part of its efforts to promote industry. “Nizam was great king though he might have committed some mistakes”, Rao said while recalling the services rendered by the Hyderabad ruler for the educational, economic and social development of his subjects. He called him a great secular ruler.
He argued that when the people of Andhra can still remember a British engineer Sir Arthur Cotton and name a project after him for his contribution to their region’s development what is wrong in praising the Nizam.
Defending his move of paying floral tributes at Nizam’s grave on his birth and death anniversary KCR said, “Huzur Nizam was our king, a great personality with secular credentials”.
On the other hand KCR lashed out the “Andhra rulers” who ruled Andhra Pradesh over the last six decades asking what they had done for the development of the state. “The past ruler [Andhras] tried to wipeout our history without knowing our glorious past”, he said.
“It was the last Nizam who built hospitals and railway stations in Hyderabad. Have they [Andhra rulers] built any new government hospital or railway station after he left?” he asked.
“It was we who introduced Hyderabadi Tehzeeb to Seemandhra people. Telangana people have been enjoying Sherwani, Biryani and Qubani [famous apricot sweet] for the last three hundred years”, he said.
KCR said that people of Telangana would always been proud of Nizam for what he did for the development of the state. “It was the last Nizam who constructed the irrigation projects and railway stations at Nampally, Secunderabad and Kachiguda. The Osmania University, Osmania General Hospital and several other hospitals including mental hospital were built during Nizam’s rule. He gave his own 250 acres of land for the purpose”.
KCR also recalled that even after he had lost power, Nizam utilised his own lands and money to build an orthopaedic hospital to help the needy as there was no such hospital in the city.
KCR said that whenever he praises Nizam, he has to face the criticism of leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema. But he did not refer to the spate of attacks of some right-wing Hindu leaders including VHP international president Pravin Togadia recently.
Togadia had alleged last week that KCR was trying to bring back Nizam’s rule by promoting Urdu language and giving reservations to Muslims.
KCR announced that the land of Exhibition Society will be registered very soon in the name of Exhibition Society and urged the society not to build any further structures on it as it should be utilised only for conducting annual exhibitions and develop it to the level of Pragati Maidan of New Delhi.
Talking about the serious problems of traffic congestions and water clogging on the city roads and addition of one million people to the city population every year, KCR said that his government was devising many plans for the development of the infrastructure. He said the government will construct new railway stations at Moula Ali and Kondapur and other places to deal with the increasing traffic.
KCR said that the Nizam’s contribution for the development of Telangana will continue to be an inspiration for his government’s plans to take the region forward.
He also promised to develop signal-free and traffic-police-free junctions in the city.
Meanwhile opposition Telugu Desam leaders have reacted sharply to KCR’s praise of Nizam. “This is an attempt to mislead the people. He is doing it with an eye on the forthcoming elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation”, said E Dayakar Rao, TDP’s leader in Telangana assembly. “He is desperate to get Muslim votes”.
